Cherkley Court

This is a work in progress, the house is used for functions so it is just the gardens that you can visit. However they are really interesting as they sit on a south facing slope of the North Downs in Surrey near Leatherhead, giving fantastic views over the Mole Valley.

It seems to be an interesting garden. Thank you for the virtual tour.

Thank you for coming to my blog. You asked about summer pruning - it is a complicated topic that I didn't want to address at the time. In the US, many Austins behave differently from what they do in England. In particular, a lot of them are known as Jolly Green Giants with octopus arms for their propensity to throw long canes with too few blooms. I, along with a number of other rose growers here, refuse to grow such roses at all. In cases where a rose keeps a nice bushy shape without too much sprawling (such as Pat Austin), I prefer to let it grow as much as possible to maximize the amount of bloom. Hard pruning in summer often delays the next flush of bloom because the rose has to re-grow more cane. Often, if you do not prune hard, you get more smaller blooms on shorter stems faster (I prefer that because I get more color for less work). I summer prune some of my Austins such as Heritage that become too floppy otherwise by summer's end. Sorry for such a long comment :)
